Banyoles is a picturesque town about 20 km from the city of Girona. It is best known for the Lake Banyoles (Estany de Banyoles), the largest natural lake in Catalonia. The lake, formed by tectonic and karstic processes, is surrounded by lush greenery, walking paths, and traditional fishermen’s huts, giving the area a serene and timeless charm.
Historically, Banyoles dates back to medieval times and grew around the Monastery of Sant Esteve de Banyoles, founded in the 9th century. The old town preserves narrow streets, stone buildings, and charming squares that reflect its rich heritage. Over the centuries, the town developed as a local cultural and economic hub.
Banyoles gained international recognition when Lake Banyoles hosted the rowing competitions during the 1992 Summer Olympics. Today, it remains a popular destination for rowing, kayaking, and swimming, as well as cycling and hiking in the surrounding countryside.
Despite its modest size, Banyoles offers a vibrant atmosphere, with weekly markets, local festivals, and a strong sense of community. Its combination of natural beauty, historical depth, and outdoor activities makes it a beloved spot for both residents and visitors.
